Teaching by Stages

It is widely understood that literacy teaching should proceed by small steps, with achievement rewarded by praise and encouragement. But teachers often lack the techniques and materials to put this theory into
practice. Rapid English gives them a series of carefully structured exercises, involving looking, hearing, speaking and writing, and combining variety with repetition, that logically and systematically build up language skills in small, discrete steps. They take students with poor reading skills by easy stages from being presented with simple one- or two-letter words right through to production and spelling of complex words, and from learning words through to producing simple sentences and then to producing descriptions and narratives in paragraphs with varied sentence structures. Progression by simple steps is particularly helpful for dyslexic students.

Teachers can with absolute confidence tell students starting Rapid English YOU WILL SUCCEED. No task is difficult and every task is thoroughly mastered, so students learn to get things right all the time. The programmes give them instant feedback and allow them to compare what they are achieving with what they were able to do before. This clear evidence of their progress, combined with praise and encouragement from their teacher, reinforces their learning and makes them more confident in their ability to succeed.

“I am definitely learning - the bits I have practised are easy, it feels like they’re not even there as I don't have to think about them. It is only the new bits that I have to think about.”

“It’s really easy to praise them for [their improvement], and you can see the effect that has on their confidence.”
